![]() This campus aims to make gorillas the entry point for a lifetime of conservation activism. 2014 Grauers gorillas were named one of 25 Most Endangered Primates. In order to secure the multi-faceted gorilla conservation work for the long term, provide increasing opportunities for local people and others to become the next generation of conservationists, and to allow people from around the world to join the effort on behalf of wild gorillas and their habitat, it was critical to have a permanent, purpose-built facility to act as a hub. The Fossey Fund had minimal space for a growing staff, much less for the 400 college students who come through Karisoke each year for training. None of these facilities were built for their unique needs and did not offer adequate or permanent space. Even though the group has been working in Rwanda for more than 50 years and has experienced dramatic growth in their programs, they still operated out of rented facilities in the town of Musanze, 30 kilometers from the national park where the gorillas live. The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla fund was officially opened in February 2022, the Ellen Fund was established to support the formation of an everlasting home for the Dian Fossey Fund. ![]() This Campus is for the Fossey Fund - a separate organization - and it will serve as their first permanent headquarters. Not only do they address all threats to the gorillas - from human illnesses to habitat loss - but they also work closely with the surrounding communities to help assure locals and the gorillas can live together in harmony. We’re going to help the gorillas stay wild, while we humans learn and get inspired on the Campus.įossey Fund: The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund has been doing amazing work for over 50 years to assure Dian’s mission of saving the gorillas. Not a Sanctuary: The Campus has lots of living space for students and researchers… but none for gorillas. Their studies include a wide range of topics from gorilla health to biodiversity, to how humans and other primates interact. Only three years ago, we here at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo joined people from all around the world to launch the first World Gorilla Day and celebrate the success of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund as the world’s longest running and largest organization dedicated entirely to gorilla conservation. Why else? In addition to saving the gorillas, we aim to train the next generation of African conservationists. Why? The goal of the campus is to provide the tools to The Fossey Fund to help save the gorillas, while inspiring everyone who visits to cherish gorillas and their conservation. When? The Campus groundbreaking was Februwith a completion goal of 2021, depending upon the weather and many other factors. Buildings include student housing, an education center, research center, conservation gallery, and researcher housing. What?
